I started my career (after a brief stint at my Ontario hometown paper) as a reporter and later senior editor with the The Tyee, in Vancouver, before co-founding a company there called Discourse Media. Both organizations have been a big part of shaping who I am as a journalist.
I tend to work from a solutions journalism angle, which looks at how regular people are finding ways to tackle the big problems in their communities.
I've written for dozens of publications, including The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, and Al Jazeera, from countries in the Americas and Southeast Asia. A good deal of my international reporting has been made possible thanks to grants and fellowships, including those from the Fund for Investigative Journalism, the Leonard C. Goodman Fund for Investigative Reporting, the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting, and the Society for Environmental Journalists.
